December 2022 Main Challenge - SPARKLE and ADD GESSO

Hello everyone and welcome to another month of lovely challenges from More Than Words.

This month we are inviting you to add a little sparkle and to add some gesso to your page. (Note: gesso doesn't have to be white, there are many colours plus transparent gesso.)

We also are excited to share the latest issue of our new digital magazine - Artful Pages - more details below!

But first, let's look at this month's art journal challenge!

Our challenge has two parts, please use both prompts to inspire you:

Helpful Tips For The Challenge

We would like you to be inspired by both parts of our challenge
- our word inspiration SPARKLE and our creative challenge - ADD GESSO.
We can't wait to see what you do and if you need more inspiration, you might find our new magazine useful!

As mentioned at the top of the post, we are excited to share the latest issue of our new digital magazine - Artful Pages - which is a new way of looking at our challenges and inspiration, as well as being able to add more value for our readers which we are not able to do in our current formats.  So here's a look at our latest issue which is available to flick through online just like a real magazine.  The magazine contains more about our challenges this month, our Design Team inspiration,Guest Designer interviews, and more!  Check it out and see for yourself - we would love your feedback!

Let's see what our lovely new Design Team have created this month...

ELLE - EOTC

Elle says:  May the festive season sparkle and shine.  I used white gesso mixed with pastels on my background to make the swirly pattern. Then on top I added some glitter paste and then the blue shiny diecut snowflakes. Then I wrote out the words with a gold pen.

HEIDI MATTESSICH

Heidi says:  Hi guys! Here is my inspiration for the December Main Challenge. After pasting down my collage bits, I first applied some clear gesso to prime the surface and then whitewashed with watered down white gesso to give it a muted even tone. I painted the branches with watercolors and then again used white gesso to create to snow. My picture did not fully capture the sparkle on the branches that I added with touches of iridescent paint. Happy December!!

SHARON FRITCHMAN

Sharon says:  When making my mixed media art journal page, I used GESSO (white and black) to liven up my background a bit. I wanted Deb Weiers' wonky bird (from ArtStacks) to SPARKLE, so I added black Stickles to her spots! She is also holding some shimmering balloons for fun!

DECEMBER 2020 2nd Reveal of Main Challenge - CHILDHOOD & ADD GOLD

Welcome to the 2nd Reveal of our DECEMBER Main Challenge!

This month we are asking you to add a touch of gold to your project!

Our Main Challenge is based on a word inspiration and a creative challenge.

Word Inspiration - CHILDHOOD
Creative Challenge - ADD GOLD

HELPFUL TIPS FOR THE CHALLENGE

At this time of year we often associate CHILDHOOD with Christmas as it can be such a special time. If so, we’d love to see what you’re inspired to create! But maybe you’d prefer to create about your own childhood or a special memory you have. Or do you have a photo of a child you’d like to record? We need to see in your project how our word inspired you. If it isn’t obvious in your work, then please explain it in your post.

It seems the right time of year for some sparkle and shine, so we’d like to see you ADD GOLD to your project!

And now let's look at our second DT Inspiration for this month...

Heike: The beauty of Christmas, is the beauty of CHILDHOOD. I decided to create a Christmas scrapbook layout in mixed media style for our main December challenge. I love everything about the festive December month. The smell of homemade cookies, hot chocolate, the tradition decoration in red, green and gold, the secrets and the family togetherness. The memory of my Christmas-childhood long time ago was my inspiration for the December page. I used for my layout the Dreamland paper collection of 13arts and I added lots of gold glitter ink and WOW gold embossing powder on the background. Also a little bit gold glitter ink on the clock. I wish you a Happy Christmas with many beautiful memories.

Dana: One of my favorite CHILDHOOD memories is visiting Santa. I still get excited when I see him at the mall. There is still a bit of magic left in the season for me, even now. I added GOLD texture paste, stars, metallic fringe, and adhesive gems.

Heather: Ho, Ho, Ho! The word "Childhood" sent me hunting through old photos of my kids at Christmas time. I found this funny one so I thought the title was appropriate. I used ArtStacks poppies, words and hand and added "Gold" to some of the Dusty Attic chipboards. I also added gold thread and, of course, the gold title.

Anastasia: What a wonderful December challenge!!! In this multi-layered canvas I wanted to show the spirit of Christmas in my favorite traditional Christmas colors: red, green and GOLD! Central element of the composition is a photo of my children from last year family shooting. I hope they will keep these wonderful memories from CHILDHOOD for a long time! Paper collection "Merry & Bright" by Mintay Papers. Watch Anastasia's process video here: https://bit.ly/3qos3dX

Sarah: Those moments that make up our CHILDHOOD, this is what inspired me with the challenge of December. We love to walk in the forest and especially to have a snack outside. Precious moments that I hope will keep and endure. I enjoy nature in all harmlessness. For the GOLD color, I used icing paste gold with a Finnabair stencil that I love.
