May 2021 Main Challenge 2nd Reveal - FACES and KRAFT BACKGROUND

Welcome to the 2nd reveal of our May Main Challenge! This month we ask you to use the inspiration word FACES and add a KRAFT BACKGROUND to your project.

As always, our Main Challenge is based on a word inspiration and a creative challenge. The word inspiration can appear on your project or not but you must show that you have been inspired by it. The creative challenge must be used on your project!

Word Inspiration - FACES
Creative Challenge - KRAFT BACKGROUND

We have a treat for you! For the month of May, we have joined with Kraft Plus Challenges to create one joint challenge that you can enter both challenge sites with! Here's how it works: Create a project on a KRAFT BACKGROUND using FACES as your inspiration. Enter your project in either one, or both, challenges. That's it! Each challenge site will run their challenges as usual.
And now let's look at our second DT Inspiration for this month:

Aude: For the FACEs and KRAFT challenge, I decided to highlight my friend Christelle, a nice photo of her wedding. I always create in the romantic style. I used a kraft paper bag as a basic support and patterned papers from the Mintay Florabella collection.

DanaI love the reckless, loose, and joyous spirit of the band FACES. Rod Stewart's distinctive raspy singing voice is instantly recognizable and is one of my favorites to listen to. I used a Faces concert poster that featured mix-and-match face sections and had an absolute blast putting the parts together to make faces (while listening to the album!) across the center of the page. I used a black and KRAFT patterned paper for the base of this layout and painted sections of the design to add color.

Emma: What a challenge! KRAFT paper as my base sheet and as a tag behind my image. For the FACES word challenge I couldn't stop singing Bowie's 'Changes' song with the lyrics featured. So I used it as my title along with the face image that I found on Pinterest and stencil from my stash. I also used products from 2Crafty Chipboard.

Heikes: For our beautiful May challenge I decided to get out some of my FACE stamps. The collage FACE image should be my focal point. I built my layout around this boy FACE. This was so much fun, to start a layout with a collage image. I applied a white wash to my KRAFT background paper, first. The white wash should ensure that my stamped image is nice and clear. A little bit of watercolor and stickers from 13@rts here and there, and much more. I think the FACE photos from Tim Holtz complete my layout.

SharonWhen I saw this challenge was about FACES, I immediately remembered photos of my daughter that I took when she was 6 years old. She was posing for the camera and looked absolutely adorable making her silly FACES and wearing cool shades. I used KRAFT paper as my background and designed my page with patterned paper and embellishments to draw your eye to the adorable fun FACES!!

AgaMy inspiration this month is a collage made in my art journal. Sometimes people can't talk about their emotions, but we see on their FACES that something is going on. We think ‘If only FACES could talk... it’ll be so much easier.’ I used a lot of KRAFT paper elements in the background of my collage. I tore the KRAFT paper into pieces and glued it onto old book pages. I painted the background using acrylic paint, embossed stamps, and I also used modeling paste with a stencil. I used 13 Arts gesso, modeling paste, acrylic ink, stencil and stamps and AB Studio wings from transparent foil.

AsiaI have a art journal in KRAFT papers. I love to use saturated colors so I decided to add red and turquoise. I found a few gears that I prepared for another project and an idea for a male art journal page came up. I used a transparent foil from AB studio from which I transferred the male figure to the page. The man's FACE expresses self-confidence and self-control, and I matched the inscriptions with it.

Priya: For FACES, I used some face molds and a quote "if only FACES could talk." For KRAFT, I used a corrugated cardboard sheet.

And now for some of those changes mentioned above. There will no longer be Runner Up, Random, or Mystery winners for our Main Challenge. This year we have changed to a Regional Prize structure, whereby there will be multiple Main Challenge Winners, one or more from each Region. The number of Winners/Prizes for each Region is dependent on the number of Sponsors for that Region. Some of our Sponsors remain as International Sponsors but many are now Region specific. Design Team Inspiration

And now let's look at our first DT Inspiration for this month:

LISA OXLEY

Lisa:  For those that know my creative process, know absolutely that creating with a brown/Kraft element is not really my bag. That stated, when I saw the theme, it took a few days for me to push myself into it. The DWM journal, luckily, provided a perfect substrate, and with a coat of gold gesso, I disconnected from the Kraft to celebrate the gold. A friend has sent me this Da Vinci printed book mark, and I'm so happy it caught my eye. A few ephemera elements and this baby was birthed.

MARIE JOHANSSON

Marie: Creating a layout with a Kraft paper as base might be the most natural thing to do for this challenge - and I do love working on Kraft for a layout - but as usual I want to give myself a real challenge. I had this piece of vintage book page in a Kraft type of paper that was gifted to me a couple of years ago. It's precious to me, and I have holding on to it for the perfect project. This was it! I added it as base to this Art Journal page. With a small amount of ink and a lovely stamped girl face I´m happy with the interpretation of this challenge.

OLYA RAGOZONI

Olya: hello everyone! For this month my inspiration is the passport gift box and passport cover. I used KRAFT for the base of the box, also KRAFT paper cutting. I made the word FACE from toothpicks and placed it on the box. I made many FACES of the Moon from clay and moulds.

SARAH DORGERE

Sarah:  To illustrate this challenge, I wanted to represent different FACES across time and space. So I worked on my journal art with a KRAFT coffee filter background then put some planets and circles stamps using a stencil. For the portraits and the frames I used an AB Studio collection.

VIDHI JADEJA

Vidhi:  Hello, I have created an art Journal page on Kraft paper. I was inspired to add a FACE and paint it. I used a stamp image of this girl and painted with acrylic colours. Added a tagline of " I am enough. A thousand times enough. " Added this tagline for them who thinks Girls are not enough, for each and every step they need support. But sorry, times have changed. We are enough and can take all steps by our own. A thousand times enough.....

Heather:  The word FACES made me think of the different faces that we wear during our lives. This led to think about the different 'hats' we wear.  I seem to be switching from one hat to another a lot lately and sometimes it gets a bit overwhelming. I feel like it's a mystery which hat I'm going to be wearing from one hour to the next.
With this in mind I made a tongue-in-cheek board game - spin the spinner and see which hat to wear next!  This was a great way to use up paper scraps and leftover alphas. I printed an assortment of hats and typed the names of some of the 'hats' I wear on them. The spinner is a chipboard arrow and the face is one from ArtStacks.

Elle:  She wore a thousand faces all to hide her own. With the challenge being FACES and it being for May, I immediately though of Gemini, the twins, and so I drew two faces on the Kraft background, and drew little gold Gemini symbols on it. As it was an astrological theme (for me) I gave both of them galaxy background hair, eyes and mouth, with stars in their hair.

JINAL SAVLA

Jinal:  Hey my crafty fam! Hope you are well! I have used Kraft as my base.. And here is my abstract which is totally inspired by the ongoing pandemic... There is so much going on out there.. yet our lives don't stop.. Let us believe this is just a phase of life which will eventually fade so why not FACE it with all your teeth and a cuppa coffee!

Kat: For May challenge Faces and Kraft, I decided to make it romantic.
The beautiful woman's image was my focal point (Kraft picture). I built my art work around this FACE.
In my work I used KRAFT background paper but I love colour I decided to get some brown and gold.

March 2021 Main Challenge 2nd Reveal - CARPE DIEM AND MARKMAKING

Welcome to the 2nd reveal of our March Main Challenge! This month we ask you to share what CARPE DIEM means to you and to add some MARKMAKING to your project.

As always, our Main Challenge is based on a word inspiration and a creative challenge. The word inspiration can appear on your project or not but you must show that you have been inspired by it. The creative challenge must be used on your project!

Word Inspiration - CARPE DIEM
Creative Challenge - MARKMAKING

Helpful Tips For The Challenge

CARPE DIEM means "seize the day!" How do you or your friends or family make the most of life's opportunities? Does your child love school? Are you starting a new job? Maybe you're simply enjoying what life has to offer.

For an extra challenge, add some MARKMAKING to your project. Add lines, doodles, or hand-drawn designs.

And now let's look at our second DT Inspiration for this month:

Anna: For our CARPE DIEM challenge I decided to make an art journal entry with photos cut out from magazines. I was focusing on photos that made me smile, were full of colors, textures, that made me dream of fun, traveling and discovering new places! I also played a little with MARKMAKING, which in my opinion is the best way to add personal style to the page.

AsiaI associated both the required elements of the challenge with fun in an art journal. I decided to vent my emotions, just have fun without thinking about whether the given colors and shapes fit together. In this project CARPE DIEM is also about using techniques that I am still learning. I captured the free moment and decided to use it for learning. In the project, I used a gelly plate and stencil from our sponsor AB Studio. When I was satisfied with the colors created with paints, I started MARKMAKING. I used acrylic markers and a hot foil pen, which helped me transfer the turquoise and purple foils from AB Studio into the paper.

AudeThe word CARPE DIEM makes sense for me especially when creating art. I love life and it's a real invitation to enjoy the moment. Every word is important to me especially in these difficult times. I used the MARKMAKING because I love to use my large collection of sprays and wax.

DanaI often wish I could carry the sun around on a string so that I could CARPE DIEM shining in bright light and warmth. It is definitely harder to get motivated on the darker days. I enjoyed MARKMAKING around the stenciled and stamped designs on these art journal pages.

Emma: Let's SEIZE THE DAY or CARPE DIEM in our lives and create days of creativity! This is my reality! For the MARKMAKING concept I have doodled a border around my pages and added scribbles to them. My pages feature Darkroom Door stamps.

Heikes: The month of March is my favorite month of the year. Not because it is my birthday month, but because it is World Women's Day on the 8th of March. The phrase CARPE DIEM is my honor to Mother Teresa. In my eyes she lived her life according to the words "CARPE DIEM." She sacrificed herself to the poor, sick and dying people. In it she saw the value of life, her personal "CARPE DIEM." The Mother Teresa image is from ScrapFX. I painted the word "CARPE DIEM" with black watercolor. For the creative challenge "MARKMAKING" I used Stabilo Woody 3 in 1 Pencils and Crayons for my "MARKMAKING" and as you can see I used the whole background, that was fun!

PRIYA MISHRA

Priya: The past year taught us how important it is to spend time with your dear ones, taking care of yourself and your health. Everyday is special and we should learn to make it beautiful in our own special way. This is what my layout shows too. For the word inspiration CARPE DIEM, I used the actual word in the background and a lot of quotes to complement it. For the creative inspiration, MARKMAKING, I created all background work with my black marker without any stamps or stencils. It's so much fun working on this project. I used watercolors too.

SharonOur youngest daughter, Anne, has shown us from day one that she is able to overcome many obstacles to obtain her dreams. I took this photo during the fall of her high school senior year, and to me, it definitely illustrates how she loves to seize the day, aka CARPE DIEM! For the creative challenge, MARKMAKING, I marked my border with hand-drawn squares to draw your eye in to the photo. And to accentuate it more, I drew scallops around Anne's photo.

AgaCARPE DIEM means 'seize the day.' For me it means 'celebrate every single day.' Time flies quicker than we think, no one will wait for us and we need to work at our top speed. That’s why I decided to create these art journal pages with acting words (love, laugh, be brave, etc.). I used color glows by 13Arts to paint the circles and a black pen to do some MARKMAKING between them.
